Want to know the top 5 Workout trends for 2010? You may be surprised to find some old favorites standing strong on this year’s list grouped with a couple of new ones. Counting down from five, here’s my list of top trends for 2010:

5. Functional Training A carry-over from years past, building functional strength continues to be a trend to watch. Compound movements that require the use of more than one muscle group at a time combined with any exercise that mimics every day movements keep this trend popular. Want to choose some functional exercises? Think squats, lunges and compound moves like step-ups with shoulder press to complete your workout.

4. Budget Friendly Workouts The recession may be tapering off, but the need for affordable exercise continues to be forefront in the minds of all the exercisers in the world. Included in this are at-home workouts with an online trainer or a workout DVD. Online personal training with a real professional will increase in popularity in 2010, and FitOrbit will be a proud leader of this growth. Also, more and more workout arenas are offering affordable rates, group classes and incentives like “buy one get one free” to entice their clients to stay on during tough economic times.

3. Time Friendly Workouts We continue to be very busy people! Fitting in quality workouts into a busy schedule can be challenging, but not impossible. A focus on shorter length workouts will be big in 2010 so even the busiest of exercisers can be fit in less time. You can get a lot done in ten minutes!

2. Specialty Group Classes Did you go to a Zumba class in 2009? How about a Pole workout? Specialty workouts will continue to seduce us into getting fit, but it’s hard to predict exactly where the trend will go. Working out in a group can inspire and push you harder and having it be fun and new is an even bigger draw.

And the number one workout trend in 2010?

1. Exergames and Wii-kouts Wii and computer driven games will continue to explode in 2010. And why not? It combines our love of video games with a (sometimes) great workout. I already have clients who workout to their Wii and I don’t complain as long as it isn’t taking the place of their formal workouts. I’m not completely sold on a Wii-only diet of fitness, but if it gets you moving, more power to you!

Keep an eye out for these and other trends that will continue to grow in 2010. As always, the best trend is the one you’re going to stick to because when it comes to fitness, doing something is better than doing nothing at all.
