Did someone say diet? I absolutely loathe the ‘D’ word! Life is too short to count calories and feel tired. Let’s leave the dieting and denying in the past and find ways to enjoy food right now. How do we do such a thing? Instead of focusing exclusively on HOW MUCH you eat, I say let’s look at the WAY you eat. When you adhere to these 5 simple rules, you won’t ever have to go on a diet again. You may find that you enjoy healthier foods and feel better about the choices you make. Try it out for a week and see how you feel!
.) Don’t eat when you’re bored and don’t eat when you’re stressed. Sometimes we turn to food to fill the time and to make us feel better. There are many other ways to deal with boredom and emotions. Take a walk, do yoga, talk to a friend, make some tea or play with your dog. If you’re at work, take a stretch break and grab some water. Also, see my article “Working Out at Work.”
.) Eat when you’re hungry. Stop when you’re full. When we listen to our bodies, they tell us when to eat and when to stop. There’s a balance between stuffing yourself until you feel groggy and eating until you’re just barely full and you’ll be hungry again in two hours. Find the middle ground for you and you will feel more energized during the day. Also, see Rule 3 below.
.) Eat mindfully. This means, sitting in a chair at a table. This also means turn off the television and put down the newspaper. They will still be there when you are through eating. Become aware of each bite you take. Savor the food. Even when you eat with friends and family, you can slow down and enjoy your meal.
.) If it comes from the earth, it is probably good for you. If it doesn’t, it probably isn’t as good for you. Fruits and vegetables are good. Junior Mints aren’t as good. Whole grains are good sources of carbohydrates. Processed sugars are not. Be wary of highly processed foods and preservatives. Eat as fresh as you can. Use common sense and choose items that make you feel good and energized.
.) Don’t deny yourself. Eat everything in moderation. Let’s say you really like donuts. No worries! Treat yourself to a donut once a week. If you’re going to eat things that you know are bad for you, then do it mindfully. Be aware of each bite you take. Enjoy it instead of getting frustrated with yourself. Chances are, you’ll be satisfied sooner and not have a craving later.
